Changes: Expansion

Expansions allow the player to enlarge the building area of their city. One expansion unlocks an area of 4x4 tiles that has to be placed adjacent to the current building area grid. Expanding is crucial part of the game since buildings tend to get larger through ages and players need to upscale the city's production numbers to advance at a decent rate.

Players start the game with 16 expansions.

Expansion Types

There are three different types of expansions: Reward expansion, Victory expansion and Diamond expansion. Each of those have different means of availability.

Reward expansions are unlocked by researching certain technologies in the technology tree or rewarded upon the conquest of a certain provinces on the campaign map. Once unlocked players must pay coins to place those expansion. Alternatively players can pay diamonds instead.

Victory expansions can be bought for medals. Victory expansions do not have to be individually unlocked and can be placed at any time provided the player has enough medals to pay for them. Medals can be obtained from PVP tower competitions, contribution rewards from Great Buildings, from medal packages during special events, quests, Daily Challenges, Guild Expeditions, incidents and special buildings placed in the city.

Premium expansions can be bought for diamonds. Premium expansions are however limited to two expansions per age, meaning that if player has already placed two premium expansions in the current age the next 2 premium expansions will become available only once the player advances to the next age. If the player advanced through the ages and does not buy premium expansion then those expansion can be bought retrospectively. Since the Arctic Future the limit of two premium expansions per age rises accordingly: Arctic Future unlocks 3, Oceanic Future unlocks 6, Virtual Future unlocks 6, Space Age Mars unlocks 3 and Space Age Asteroid Belt unlocks 3.

Availability

There are currently 207 expansion plots in the city's buildable area, but only 197 known sources for expansions which are:

16 expansions already in place in a new city.
56 reward expansions, obtained through research.
41 reward expansions, obtained from conquests on the campaign map.
37 victory expansions.
47 premium expansions.

Here's an age breakdown of how many expansions you can get from research, the campaign map, and premium expansions. While the research and premium expansions are age locked, the campaign map expansions are not since you can progress further than your current age.
