The Gliders are the second fast military unit of the Oceanic Future. It is unlocked by research the technology Accelerated Breaching. It is trained in the Glider Hive.
Compared to the Recon Raider, its predecessor, the Gliders gains 20 attack and defense whilst range is kept the same, but it loses 6 movement. It also has very good bonuses against ranged and artillery units as well as various terrain bonuses, but it now re-acquires the Flying ability and gains a new Swarm ability. In the Oceanic Future, the Gliders have a very high attack, but a squishy defense that can easily be breeched by light and heavy units, and potentially even ranged units.
Usage[]
Like previous Flying units, the Gliders is very useful as it cannot be targeted by artillery units and is unaffected by terrain (though the AI may sometimes move the unit onto its designated terrain bonuses). Combined with its powerful attack, the Gliders can easily reduce armies to shreds before they can move, although the trouble comes when units have defensive skills and bonuses, and can counterattack on the next round and easily eliminate the Gliders on the next turn. Its Swarm ability is also rather useless, given the fact that it constitutes rather little compared to the high boosts that many players will have anyway.
Against Same Age Units[]
Hydroelectric Eel[]
As both fast units move together, the Hydroelectric Eel generally has the advantage of hiding in bushes, despite the Gliders' fast mobility. Other than that they are on even terms with each other, and the team with the greater number of fast units will be stronger in the early first strike.
Gliders[]
The best way to take out enemy Gliders is to have them in greater number; this will allow you to get the most first turns and eliminate them before they can do much damage back. Gliders can deal significant damage to each other, so make sure to efficiently eliminate them first.
Manta[]
The Gliders are very weak against the Manta, particularly as they have to suffer a serious retaliation for their attacks against the Manta, which can cause significant damage. Furthermore, the Gliders should totally avoid attacking the Manta due to their painful Contact! ability and bonuses against fast units unless they are finished afterwards.
Scimitar[]
The Scimitar is a threat to the Gliders, especially as they have also very good movement and the Dragon Breath ability, which allows them to deal potentially a lot of damage to the Gliders. The only advantage the Gliders have over the Scimitar is their fast first attack, and potentially eliminating them before they can counterattack.
Sub Cruiser[]
The Gliders are strong against the Sub Cruiser, but they still have to contend with the Sub Cruiser's annoying retaliation. Despite this, the Gliders can easily kill Sub Cruisers in two hits, although the retaliation and counterattack may cause some damage to the Gliders however.
Nautilus[]
The Gliders are very strong against the Nautilus, with the only drawback being the Nautilus's Force Field ability. Despite this, the Gliders can still kill the Nautilus in two hits given a good boost and bonuses in attack, whilst the Nautilus will struggle to deal much damage back.
C.R.A.B. Mech[]
The Gliders are very weak against the Crab Mech, as they have a very high attack, bonuses against fast units and the Blast ability, which can easily kill the Gliders in two hits. Furthermore, the Reactive Armor ability of the Crab Mech can also greatly reduce the Gliders' effectiveness against killing Crab Mechs on the first turn.
Octopod[]
The Gliders are ineffective against the Octopod, especially as the Octopod has great bonuses against fast units as well as very strong attack and defense, making them difficult to kill. Meanwhile, the Octopod can easily destroy Gliders in two hits.
Turturret[]
The Gliders are the best solution against the Turturret, given that the Gliders are a Flying unit, and Turturrets are unable to attack them. The only threat is the Turturret's Mortar ability, which can still damage nearby Gliders, so always make sure to use a full army of Gliders when fighting Turturrets.
Medusa[]
The Gliders are also the best solution against the Medusa, especially as the Medusa cannot attack the Gliders, which is extremely useful at ignoring the deadly first strikes of the Medusa. Likewise, always make sure to use a full army of Gliders when fighting Medusas, as non-Flying units on your team will easily be targeted and killed by the Medusa, leading to unnecessary deaths.
