The Imperial Guard is the heavy unit in the Late Middle Ages, unlocked after having researched the Pike Square technology. Compared to the Heavy Infantry, it gains +7 attack and +7 defense and it has a moderate attack and the highest defense among all LMA units, and has bonuses against Light units (+7 attack +7 defense).
Usage[]
The Imperial Guard is mostly effective against the Great Sword Warrior and Berserker, and possibly the Heavy Knight, but has difficulties against the Longbow Archer and Cannon and even Heavy Knights with Chivalry. Like previous Heavy Units it is dangerous for other units to get close quarters to them, and they suffer a lot from ranged attacks mainly due to their slow movement. The Imperial Guard should be replaced by the Grenadier as fast as possible once reaching the Colonial Age as they are no match against CA units, not even the Ranger.
History[]
A Swiss pikeman, also known as an imperial guard, is a type of mercenary (a hired soldier). Mercenaries had become more popular than regular soldiers due to the fact that the royals could hire them without training them. A downside is that they were not very trustworthy as they tended to only fight for the highest bidder. The Swiss pikemen, a type of mercenary armed with a pike or halberd, are known for their pike square formation and their unique, aggressive tactics.
