The Octopod is the second heavy military unit of the Oceanic Future. It is unlocked by research the technology Chromatophore Synthesis. It is trained in the Octo Depot. It can also be received by completing the Wrong Story Quest.
The Octopod itself has very good stats in the Oceanic Future: they have a strong attack as well as the highest defense compared to other same age units. They have good movement and decent range, and are able to attack enemies on the other side in two turns. They have bonuses against fast and ranged units and various terrain bonuses, and a unique special ability called Frenzy. Octopods are also able to move onto water tiles, but they have an initiative value of 10, meaning they move last in most circumstances.
Usage[]
The Octopod is also a somewhat situational unit, as it counters ranged units effectively, but they often struggle a lot when fighting Stealth units, such as the Hydroelectric Eel and the infamous Hover Tank. The Octopod also counters melee and short ranged units quite effectively, if the Frenzy ability is put to good use and their very strong stats makes them very useful when fighting weaker units that do not have many defensive capabilities, although some may think the ability is quite useless, given the fact that you have to go straight into enemy lines to take advantage of it.
However, the Octopod's worst fears are artillery units; despite having very good movement and range, its low initiative value allows artillery units, especially the Turturret to deal enormous amounts of damage to the Octopod. Furthermore, the Octopod should be discontinued past the Oceanic Future due to its much decreased stats compared to higher era units.
Against Same Age Units[]
Hydroelectric Eel[]
Despite the Octopod's bonuses against fast units, the Octopod sometimes struggles to deal with the Hydroelectric Eel because of their Stealth ability, especially as the Eels can move before the Octopod and hide on the first turn. However, the Octopod does take reduced damage and can easily kill exposed Eels, though other units are better for the job than the Octopod.
Gliders[]
The Octopod is very strong against the Gliders, especially because the Octopod takes little damage and easily destroys Gliders in two hits. Even better, the Octopod can sometimes take advantage of its Frenzy ability and easily eliminate multiple Gliders which have clumped together on the first strike.
Manta[]
The Octopod is generally weak against the Manta despite being able to avoid their Contact! ability. The Octopod may not deal much damage to the Manta, whilst the Manta's Poison damage and bonuses may deal significant damage to the Octopod.
Scimitar[]
This is quite a weird match-up, due to the fact that the Scimitar has bonuses against heavy units, yet the Octopod's Frenzy ability is very strong at killing Scimitars, due to the fact that the Scimitar is a melee unit. However, the Scimitar can still deal considerable damage to the Octopod, so other units should be used instead.
Sub Cruiser[]
The Octopod is very strong against the Sub Cruiser, as they can easily finish them in two hits, whilst the Sub Cruiser's retaliation and their normal attacks are unable to deal much significant damage to the Octopod.
Nautilus[]
The Octopod is also very strong against the Nautilus, given that you have a good attack boost so that you are able to two hit kill Nautili with their Force Field ability. Even if you can't, the Nautilus struggles to deal much damage against the Octopod.
C.R.A.B. Mech[]
The Octopod is generally strong against the Crab Mech, due to the greater range and mobility of the Octopod, with the only drawback being the Crab Mech's Reactive Armor ability. Octopods may also be able to take advantage of their Frenzy ability, given the Crab Mech's short range.
Octopod[]
The Octopod is decently strong at countering enemy Octopods, but the side with the greater boosts will determine the winner of the fight. Generally you should avoid using Octopods against Octopods.
Turturret[]
Turturrets easily dominate against Octopods, especially as the Turturrets' Mortar ability is very strong at damaging many Octopods on the first turn, dealing significant damage to them. Never use Octopods in face of Turturrets.
Medusa[]
The Medusa is also a big threat to the Octopod, especially as they can attack them on the first turn, and easily eliminate them in two hits, reducing your Octopod army into shreds. Never use Octopods in face of Medusas.
Trivia[]
The Octopod appears to be a mechanical version of the Octopus.
